Gyonggijeon, built in the 14th year of King Taejong (1414) for the consolidation of the king’s power after the founding of Joseon Dynasty, Gyonggijeon was enshrined with face of King Taejo. Called Uyongjon collectively in time of their construction, the jeons in Jeonju, Gyeongju, and Pyongyang were renamed Taejojinjeon in 1412. In 1442, Jeonju was renamed Gyonggijeon. During the Iimjin War with Japan, this site was destroyed by fire in 1597, and it was rebuilt in 1614.
Gyeonggijeon became famous as a background for the famous Korean TV drama series Tears of Dragon, and it is the location of the portrait of Lee Sung Gye, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty. This portrait is the only piece to survive the Imjin War. On the right side of the main gate, there is a resting place with chairs and benches. Elder citizens in the village gather here every day to associate, play chess, and gossip. It's a lively place late in the day. Earlier in the day the men sit and read the paper or nap in the shade.
To the left is a precinct used for Confucian rituals. Shrines, warehouses, and guardrooms are scattered just over the wall from the Gyeonggijeon, contrasting the rich intimate space of the royal house with the austerity of the Confucian scholar's focus upon reverence and intellectual practice.
